Cortisone Shot for bursitis?

(5 discussions)

Hi, I have seen a doctor about a pain in my soulder that will not go away.
The symptoms are: 1. Cracking and popping when I move my right shoulder 2. Extreme pain in that shoulder 3. Tingling and numbness in the right arm and fingersI obeyed what the doctor said and iced it and have been taking Naproxen 2x a day for about 2.5 weeks.
The Naproxen is buring a hole in my stomach, making me feel very sick, I have dizzy spells, and constipation, i’ve been especially tired the past couple weeks and I just can’t stand to take it anymore.
So… I want to know if a Cortisone shot is the way to go.
Will it releive the pain, or actually take care of the problem? Whatever that is.
My doctor refused to do an MRI or X-Ray for some reason.
I’m going to Mexico on a mission trip in 3 weeks and I’m on a work crew!
I need my shoulder to be in working order, and fast!
It’s been hurting me for about 2.5 months now.
HELP!THanks, Jen

Hi, I don’t know if you still need help, or are even going to be reading this. I am having the same problem in my hip. Can’t sleep the pain is so bad. Took the anti-inflamatory, and it didn’t do squat. My doctor also shyed away from doing an x-ray becase he said he wouldn’t be able to see anything anyway. So today I got the shot. Didn’t hurt a bit because I’m so inflamed. So far it feels the same, but the doctor is also having me do physical therapy, so we’ll see. I wish you good luck!

Jen~I had the same thing in my shoulder. I went through 3 1/2 months of that and then finally they gave me a cortisone shot on Wednesday. My shoulder feels sooooo much better. I’m not sure how long it’s going to last, but for now I’m not complaining!!

HI, been having pain in shoulder for about 5 months now. Been doing physical therapy for 1 month, but not working. Dr. gave me a cortisone shot today, but it still hurts. How long before it takes effect? I thought it would feel great right after the shot. Shauna, how long did your Corisone shot last?

Wow I can’t believe I stumbled on this board. I just had cortisone shot today for my hip. This has been going on since about Labor Day. I work in retail and one day I got off work and I could barley walk. IT felt like a needle in my hip. I have arthritis in my knee and thought it was basically related to that since my knee is sooooooooo weak. I take Celebrex for my arthritis but 200 mg seems to make me sleepy so I was only taking it when I was in really bad pain. Then the Dr. told me to keep taking it and see if it helped. Well it did help I noticed that my hip wasn’t hurting after a while. Last week I was on vacation and really didn’t take the Celebrex that much but I had a terrible pain in my side. IT was so bad I couldn’t sleep on it. When I went back to work on Monday by 2:00 I could barely stand. I took a Tylenol pm and 3 extra strength Tylenol and I was up all night in pain. I started to go to the emergency room. Tuesday I went to work and I left about 20 minutes early because I was in such pain. I called and orthopedic Dr. and they had an appt for me today. I went and he poked and prodded and said it was bursitis. He said I could do PT and cortisone cream or he could give me a shot. I took the shot then went to work. That was a mistake I should have went home because I was in pain. I’m home now and I still have to go to physical therapy (PT) I have a headache right now and I think I’ll go to bed. I hope this works. I’m still taking my celebrex and I know that will also help stop the pain.Everyone take careKatherine 🙂

Hi,Been going through same pain in shoulders and symptoms for about a year, physical theropy etc. Dr. wants to do bone scan, MRI, Cat Scan. Have done X-rays, altra sound and many visits to the Dr. For Pain killers. Sleep only 2 hours per night pain is 24-7, worse when lying down or not moving.. Last thing to do is Cortisone… need help cause I don’t want it to become worse or have side effects. Have been researching on the internet but everyone just wants to sell “gel & other stuff” Does the pain return? The doctor does not have any answers or diagnose me yet? Need Help…
