Cracked rib from adjustment?

(3 discussions)

I’ve been under the care of a Chiropractor and massage therapist 3+weeks, treating my back and my upper neck due to a tree falling on my car from above (my head was completely turned, looking over my right shoulder at the time of the impact). I have been helped IMMENSELY by these treatments. My adjustments have been somewhat difficult – but they are really helping. After an adjustment late last week, I noticed a “Hitch” of pain at the top of my ribcage on the right side. Today I was doing a lot of bending and picking small items up off the carpet, and wow – I now think that this “hitch” could be a cracked rib. Sleeping does not bother me, nor does normal breathing, but bending… THAT hurts. How should I handle this with my Chiro? I mentioned the “hitch” at my appt Monday, I have a Massage/Adjustment scheduled for Friday. Should I ask for an x-ray? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for your response. You were exactly right, the pain has gradually increased. Any idea how long the pain will increase? Also, is this cracked rib problem common with Chiropractic? I suspect that my rib problem started following an adjustment last week, I mentioned the “Hitch” or “Twinge” that I felt (thinking pulled muscle?) to my Chiro on Monday at my adjustment – the pain got noticeably worse on Tuesday when I was doing some light lifting – which required bending over. Can you be more specific about how to not aggravate the rib problem – and if I should have my back/neck adjusted differently, now?

Dear Susan, Good news/Bad newsThe bad news is that a broken or more likely a fine crock in the rib can cause significant pain The pain will gradually increase and there is not much you can do to help it heal, other that avoiding this that aggregated. The good news is that if it is a creaked rib is usually not serious and will heal fine. It will be wise to x-Ray the area to make sure that your pain is not due to something else. You can visit me online or call our toll free number 877-602-7248 for your Questions. Dear Susan, I am glad you got back to me with your health problems. Your pain in the rib area should start to gradually reduce over the next several weeks. It might help to use ice. Avoid movements that cause your rib cage to expand. Let your chiropractor know your concerns and he/she should be able to use adjusting procedure that will not aggravate your rib.
