Cracking joints

(8 discussions)

Hello, I am 29 year old and all my joints: hip, knees, shoulders, ankle, wrist would crack loud. I am embarrassed by this even when sitting at a dining table and when I get up it make that sound.
When I walk briskly, I hear my hip making a funny sound (creek – creek) However, I never experience any pain. Could you say why and what could be done?
Will I eventually suffer from arthritis? (I am a very active person).anxious.

Hi, my friend suffers from noisily cracking joints (particularly his fingers) and I wanted to read up about it as I wonder if there’s anything he can do about it.
While he is older (42) I also seem to have this problem (I’m 29 like you), even though not nearly as severe.Over the last six months or so I have taken fairly high doses of Evening Primrose Oil & Codliver Oil. I take 1000mg of one of the oils every night and found that it helped me immensely.
I also take 1000mg of Glucosamine every morning.Read up about these things, they are all natural and except the Glucosamine, fairly cheap. I know how embarrassing it can be to walk up the stairs in front of somebody and every step you take is followed by a cracking noise like a piece of old wood being broken! Since taking the oils, one every day, this has got much better, yes, it still cracks occasionally but I would say now only every so often. I hope this will help you, but as mentioned, it takes about three month to work but the oils build new elastic cartilage in the joints which helps to stop the cracking noise.
Let me know what yu think, Diana

I get the same thing. My fingers crack, my back cracks, my feet crack, my neck cracks (some times… not as much any more), my knee cracks, even my elbows crack. Scientifically, there is nothing wrong with cracking your joints, as long as it is not causing pain and if it is you should contact your GP.
As for the embarrassment factor. When ever I walk on solid floors, like wood, with just my socks my feet crack loudly until they are depleted. I’ve just learnt to live with it, same with my fingers.
I’ve noticed a benefit with it. When I get a sore back, I crack almost every joint in my spine and feel relief. It immediately removes all of the tension, and my back does not hurt. If I do not crack it, however, it feels stuff and cramped. It never hurts at the joints when I crack it, and the only back pain I ever get is from very rare muscle spasms usually as a result of sprain. I digress. There is a way to stop it i’ve found out personally. When I was very young, I cracked my fingers a lot, and one day with much will power I decided to stop scared I would get arthritus. I stopped for two years. It took a good couple of months to stop them cracking on occasion but it appears that if you want to stop them cracking you need to stop cracking them! I resumed cracking them about 10 years ago, and haven’t stopped since… Same with my neck, except I stopped that as it sounded rather barbaric. As far as your foot goes, it is hard to stop cracking it as you’re always walking on it! So unless you want to get a foot brace, I say just crack it about a minute before you want to stand up without an incident. As for your hip, probably needs a good crack’n!

I became aware of my neck cracking and sounding like snap crackle and pop about 3years ago. It was persistant for over a year and then one day I realised that I hadn’t heard it for a while. But the last few days it has returned and the cracking is much worse but luckily still painless. Three GP’s said there was nothing to worry about last time, so I’m trying to get on and ignore it. I hope it dosn’t go on for too long because I can’t help worrying that it’s doing damage to the upper cervical joints. It would be good if you could give them a bit of an oil like the Tin Man(ha Ha)!

In both hands I can crack my index and middle fingers non stop, when I say non stop I mean it, I can crack em 1 second after I just cracked one, I can go as long as I want before it startes to hurt, I never treid but I know I can because one time I went for 5 mins, cracking every second and was fine, WHAT SHOULD I DO
