Curly toes

My son is 4 and my husband and I took him to the pediatrician today.
My son, Sage, has been in pain for about 6 months now and we couldn’t figure out why until recently looking at his toes.
His 3rd, 4th and 5th digits on each foot curl inward and the third digit curls so much that the 2nd digit lays over it.
He is so uncomfortable.
He is also mildly flat footed.
The pedi has referred us to a pediatric podiatrist because she has no idea what is causing it.
Will this require surgery and can you give me an explaination of what the condition is?
Foot problems run in my family.

I am sorry I would need to examine his feet in this situation before giving you an answer. I commend your pediatrician for referring you rather than many who might say he would out grow the problem.
