dislocated shoulder

(3 discussions)

I suffered my 1st dislocated shoulder last week wakeboarding.
I’ve heard that there is a good chance it will always dislocated, even after surgery to fix the ligaments.
Is there ANYTHING I can do to keep this from happening?
I compete wakeboarding and would hate it if I could never wakeboard again.
I’ve have already planned on NOT wakeboarding for 7-9 months in hope that it heals completely? Anything else, a better survery????

Hi…. When you dislocate a joint it’s best not to move that joint in the direction that it was dislocated….such as reaching behind you or backstroke movements. To let the joint heal and scar tissue to form and support the joint you must avoid such movements. Sometime they brace or tape the shoulder to “remind” you not to move in those directions. I recommend you ask your doc for a prescription for a physical therapist…then find one who is certified or at least has done kinesio taping. It takes about 2 months for those type of injuries to heal. It’s true that once you dislocate it can re-dislocate, again if you move it in the “bad” directions. If it does continue to dislocate, yes you will require surgery. So…with all that said…call your doc, see a good PT and good luck, Mya PT

    Do I need surgery?

Actually, it was a spiral break from the humerus up and around the shoulder in April ’19. Attended therapy, did exercises, etc. Sweeping a kitchen floor 2 days ago was very very painful. I feel the arm isn’t set right and I know this. I can not lay broken arm out straight and flat, nor place arm folded behind head flat . It’s terrible pain after a year. Do I need surgery? Seriously.
