distal fibula fracture & bimalleolar fracture

(3 discussions)

I fractured my ankle – had surgery to put in a plate and 2 screws on 9/20 – on 10/12 I had the cast removed because of a blood clot behind my knee.
I now have a stabilizer boot to hold the foot at a 90 degree angle to protect the tendon.
The doctor says the break is healing well, if it wasn’t for the ligament I would be walking on it.
The only exercise she recommended is lifting the leg from the knee, and swinging the leg.
This doesn’t feel like much.
The ankle is still pretty swollen – although the doctor says it looks good and will be swollen for some time. Any other ideas on exercises that might help?
I see the doctor again in 3 weeks.
Thanks.

Lie on the floor on your back…lift the leg up about 12 inches with the knee straight. Then lay on your side and lift your leg up to the ceiling. Lie on your stomach…make sure and put a pillow under your ankle…lift your leg up to the ceiling. Stay on your stomach and bend your knee as much as you can. Standing holding onto a secure surface, like a countertop, swing your leg forward about 10-20 times…then out to the side then back each 10-20 times. Like on your back with a theraball under your knees and lift up your buttocks. Then with the ball under your knees roll the ball side to side. Lying on your back with knees bent lift both knees up to our chest. There are a lot you can do besides just “swinging your leg”. Do each exercise 10-20 times…increase reps as you gain your strength . Do not put any weights on your ankle, however, there are weights that you can put around your thigh to give you a challenge. Good luck! M

hey man I am a physio student. look your not really supposed to move your ankle yet. you can wiggle your toes and get a towel and scrunch it up in your toes but your ankle still needs to be immobilized for a bit. Just be patient and go see a physiotherapist when your out of the cast. By the way if it Hurts DO NOT Continue with the ex

It’s a late answer but maybe, if posted over the internet will help other people. I have suffered an undisplaced fibula fracture above the ankle while skating and my doctor has adviced not to cast the leg but to wear a walking boot from the very begining. I got an “Air inflated” one and after one week I feel ok. Of course I do not put weight in the respective leg at all and move with crutches, but I go to the office and hope in a faster recovery than casting. REgards
