Drop foot after back surgery is most likely nerve related…either from swelling post op or damage of the nerve during the surgery…stretch, nick or actually cut. What does her doctor say? How long has it been since the surgery? There are really no exercises, per say, that will help drop foot. However, an AFO (ankle foot orthotic) will help her walking… I’m thinking right now she is either tripping a lot or has kind of a “steppage” gait…that is lifting her knee up high as she swings the foot through so it clears the floor and she does not trip. For now have her just try and move her foot… Do some ankle stretching, especially the back of the ankle/calf. She needs to contact her doc for a possible prescription for an AFO if he thinks her “drop foot” will not resolve. Good luck! M. Scott PT

I had dro foot pretty bad a few years ago after a MS exacerbation. PT sugested walking on my heels to strengthen muscles. Seemed to work pretty well. I must be very fatigued now before I notice snagging my toe on a flat floor. There was one more exercise if you’re interested. Good luck!
