fat pad atrophy

(4 discussions)

I recently began feeling a “fullness” and pain when pressure was applied toe the “full spot” below my sole of the foot. It felt like a spur. According to the doctor, I am suffering from fat pad atrophy. Does anyone know about this condition? Does anyone have success with various types of inserts or some other treatment?

Fat pad atrophy means the protective fat pad on the bottom of the foot has decreased in thickness. The underlying bones are now more likely to suffer from repetitive trauma due to a decrease in shock absorption. There are many insoles both pre-fabricated and custom available that can give some shock absorption. There are even some shoes with springs that will absorb shock as well. One is called Z-coil and the other is Sure Spring.Talk to your doctor about your needs and wants regarding insoles and what type of shoes you like to wear. Good luck.

How old is this treatment? I’m sure thistreatment is pre-mideval. I’m astoundedthere is no better treatment by now. What about ultra-sound or massage to improvebloodflow? … anything to rehabilitate thefat pad to its former and adequate thickness. : : There are many insoles both pre-fabricated and custom available that can give some shock absorption. I just spent about $5,000 in doctors, podiatrists, chiropractors, calcium supplements, hard orthotics, soft orthotics, gel heel pads, sonorex treatments, casting, night splints, etc, and guess what???!!! I was mis-diagnosed. I have fat-pad atrophy. My newest foot doctor said there is little that can be done and the causality for me is repeated cortisone shots in my foot due to plantar fascitis and heel spur syndromes. Today he got a sample in the mail that he gave me and said it might help. It is an airheel. We will see. Does anyone know of any research that is being done to inject fat from another part of the body back into the area in the heel that has lost the fat? Help!
