Fifth metatarsal?

(3 discussions)

A few days ago, while on vacation, someone stepped on the top of my foot, actually jumped on it – on a dance floor.
It was sore and bruised – I can walk but I tend to baby that side of the foot – it is in the area of the fifth metatarsal.
It is not nearly as sore as when it first happen and the swelling has gone down, sometimes I don’t feel any pain.
Only when I try to put on certain shoes that puts pressure on the injury.
Anyone had anything like this – I have not been to a dr yet.

There is a possibility you have a fracture. The best thing is to have this x-rayed and further evaluated.

I took your advice and had an xray, my fifth metatarsal is fractured. I have to wear a walking boot for 6 weeks, I go for follow-up in about 2 1/2 weeks. Is there anything I can do to speed up the healing process?

Patients always ask this question. It is difficult to convince people in this day and age of immediate gratification that injuries take time to heal. If you were a high dollar athlete on a sports team, you would have access to high tech equipment, trainers, bone stimulators etc. Unfortunately for us mere mortals, time is what we need. As a side note, I always remind patients that 6 weeks is a guesstimate. People all heal at different rates depending on age, health, compliance, etc.Hang in there.
