fifth metatarsal fracture
(2 discussions)
I fractured my fifth metatarsal three weeks ago, in what appears to be an avulsion fracture.
It is slightly displaced, but the doctor said it probably wouldn’t require surgery.
He recommended I see him four weeks later to see how it is healing, and in the meantime gave me a walking boot and said I could put weight on it.
I am still experiencing some slight pain when putting weight on it, and I have bruising on my toes and slight swelling when I take the boot off.
Is this normal?
How long to avulsion fractures generally take to heal?
If it does not heal correctly, is it too late to surgically fix?

I’m not a physician, but I am currently being treated for a fracture of the 5th metatarsal. My bruising took 4 weeks to go away and I still have swelling on week six. I asked a physical therapist that I work with how long to expect to have the swelling and he said it could be six months. Hang in there.

I did mine on Christmas. What a GREAT present that was. I’m in my 5th week of the walking shoe and I still feel a slight pain by the end of the day. I take the shoe off at home..and I notice a little swelling, nothing extreme. I can still see the bruising by my toes, slightly. I’m hoping another 3 weeks will do it.
