(5 discussions)

To whom this may concern:I have had a left foot drop for the last year.
I was wondering if there is any excerises to stregthen my left foot. Or is there anything I can do, since I am having trouble getting around.
I have heard about braces, but do they work.
Thank you.

What has caused you foot drop? Nerve damage…muscle weakness. If you have nerve damage such as from hip surgery or stroke and you’ve had the foot drop for over 3 months chances are that you would require a brace. That type of brace is called an AFO (ankle-foot orthotic) and they work very well. You can either have one molded from plastic that fits in your shoe or one that has a metal bar that attached to the sole of your shoe. Check with your doctor and he will write a script for an AFO and you can take that to an orthotist to get fitted. Good luck.

My hip was crushed in a 4-wheeler accident and I am experiencing severe pain in my foot, my hip feels fine and there is no signs of trauma to my foot. I am going on 90 days and will soon be full weight bearing. I have been givien the green light to toe tap, but that is too painful. Is there any advice on what I should ask for regarding PT recovery? Is this nerve damage? Or have you seen this happen in others. Any information would help. Thank you.
