foot sprain

Hi! I sprained my right foot about four weeks ago. I was playing Ultimate Frisbee. I jumped and landed on it, with it twisting under me. I was not wearing shoes. We put some ice on it, but I could not walk on it, so I went to the ER. The doctor seemed very distracted but told me that it was sprained. He said I should only be on crutches a couple of days and would then be able to walk. However, it would take a long time to heal. I ended up using crutches for almost a week, 3-4 days longer than he said. I then gradually started walking on it.
He also said that it would start bruising the next day. However the bruising did not start until about four or five days later. It was all along my toes on the bottom and the top, on the bottom of my foot, and on the outside of the foot. My foot was really swollen for about a week and a half. The bruising it now gone. The last of it was on top of my second toe by the middle joint. However, all the joints had been bruised. My foot is still a little swollen. I still have pain and walk with a limp. The pain is on top of my foot and on the side of my big toe. There is also some pain in my ankle, which was not present after the injury.
I did the whole RICE thing, and was told to take Ibuprofen.
I guess my main questions are…should I go see my family doctor about this, or is this just the normal run of the injury? Have you ever heard of a foot sprain before? Is there anything I can do to speed up recovery? Oh, I am female and 18 years old. i’ve been playing Ultimate Frisbee about once a week until the injury.
Thank you!

It is possible that you injured ligaments, tendons or bone. I can’t vouch that your family doctor will be the best one for this. I think a podiatrist or orthopedist can tell you more. Having said that, ER doctors are not always the best source of information.
