fractured 5th metatarsal

I fractured my 5th metatarsal 2 weeks ago last tuesday.
I’m currently in a cast, but will be getting the cast off next tuesday for traveling purposes.
I’m currently in a foreign country, so I’m a little skeptical of doctor’s advice.
The orthopedist I saw told me I’d have to be very careful because fractures of the part of the bone I fractured do not heal well.
The fracture occured on the part of the metatarsal closest to the ankle.
I want to know if this is true, and if it is, when do you think would be the appropriate time to start rehabilitating the foot and putting pressure on it.
I need to rehab this injury as quickly as possible because I am training for a fall sport.
Thank you.

From your description, it sounds like you have what is referred to as a “Jones fracture”. Your orthopedist was correct in stating these tak a long time to heal. Some require, lengthy casting, some a bone stimulator, and some require surgery. The cast may be removed, but probably shopuld be followed up with a removable cast brace. When you get home, see a podiatrist or orthopedist.Be careful!Vivian A DPM
