fractured fifth metatarsal not healing

(2 discussions)

8 weeks ago I fractured the fifth metatarsal(closer to ankle than to my little toe) of my left foot. A cast was on for 4 weeks and I used crutches and a wheelchair to get around. When the cast came off my foot was still very swollen and painful. I then wore just a cast shoe and used one crutch and started physical therapy. Last week another x ray was done and it showed that no significant healing has taken place.
The pain is still sharp if I flex or turn my foot in but I can stand on it flat without pain. There is also pain up closer to my little toe. If I have the option to wait longer for healing or to have surgery, what would your recommendation be? Thanks for any info.

I would really need to see the x-rays in order to formulate an opinion. But here are some general thoughts You might want to get a second opinion from someone who can see your foot and the x-rays. Please request copies well in advance. The original x-rays stay with the doctor.
