Fungus

On my right foot only my pinky toe looks awful. The nail is flaky and looks like it is overlapping itself in the middle. It can easily be clipped close to the cuticle without pain.
It seems like it is not attached to the skin underneath the nail.
It appears now that this fungus is starting to affect the next 4th toe as well.
I am afraid that sooner or later my entire foot will be nasty.
I have heard that prescription fungus medicine is expensive, not covered by insurance and may severely damage the liver.
Is there anything else I can do to contain this?

You have probably described a fungal infection of the nail. Further evaluation and consultation with your podiatrist or dermatologist are warranted. There are oral meds as well as a topical one PenLac. The success rate isn’t as good as the oral meds, but there is no concern about systemic problems.
