I am 58 year old male with severe joint pain in my left great toe (6+ years).
I have been researching the surgical options since all else has failed.
My question is would amputation of the toe result in larger problems (balance, pain, etc) than joint replacement or other corrective surgery?

Thank you! Is there a chance that you could recommend any documentation or web site that helps explain why fusion of the joint would be preferred over replacement or vice versa.

Without trying to sound too dramatic, surgery is an art, and subject to individual interpretation. In other words. Different doctors might have different opinions, at least on paper. Without actually seeing the problem, I really can’t say either way. You best bet is to ask for copies of your x-rays and get another opinion (or as many as you need to help answer your concerns)

YES, ABSOLUTELY! I wrote that in CAPS because along with myself, I know of no reasonable surgeon who could justify an unwarranted amputation. If the joint is destroyed then either a fusion or implant may be the way to go, not amputation.
