hammer toe surgery recovery time

I had one nuckle removed from the toe beside my baby toe and some of the nuckle removed from my baby toe last February due to rigid Hammer Toes.
I have to tape the toe down because it will not lie flat (it goes up in the air, not bending).
I am again getting pain in the toes.
It had felt much better until about a week ago.
I have not banged it or in any other way injured it as far as I know.
Is this normal or should I return to the doctor?
How long should it take for the toes to feel right?
