Hamstring spasms
(4 discussions)
I had knee surgery 5 weeks ago. Have been having severe hamstring spasms for 3 weeks that make my knee feel like it’s being dislocated, the pain is so bad I can’t put any weight on the leg.
Has anyone experienced this and what can I do? I’m doing rehab, ice, hydrotherapy in a hot tub, massage, and plan to visit my chiropractor. I’m taking a muscle relaxer and ibuprofin… still having severe spasms. I’m totally depressed… Help

Reply about fruits and veggies… he recommended no RAW fruits and veggies, as these are harder to digest, esp. if not chewed well, cooked stuff is fine. Went to a Chinese restaurant Weds. night and the stir-fry was spicey and crisp veggies. Had big flare-ups that night and the next day. Don’t know if related, but seems logical.

I wonder why no veg and fruit? I would have thought more of these would have been recommended.
What foods did he recommend?

replying to my own post… if anyone wants to know, the chiropractor has recommended a change in diet for two weeks.. no chocolate, spicey food, raw fruits and veggies, no seeds. I have been trying it for a week and I have felt relief. He also showed me some points of massage on my leg and abdomen that go along w/this. This chiropractor has helped me in the past with other problems and I would like to recommend anyone experiencing continuing pain to give a reputable one a try.

Rather than seeing a chiropracter I would suggest seeing a physical therapist. But before you do anything I think you need to go see the surgeon that did your surgery. Muscle spasms should not last as long as yours our, and I’m wondering if there is some nerve damage. If everything is fine, electrical stimulation can be very effective. I typically use this as a last resort, since it will temp. shut down the hasmtrings and could effect knee stability. I use a version of russian stimulation with a short on/off time. Essentially you are overloading the muscle to fatique.
