Hematoma PT

(4 discussions)

Hi.
I have a hematoma on my thigh and was referred to a PT.
However, simply by walking around my hematoma gets hard and big. Does using the muscles in my thigh cause my hematoma to get worse?
Would PT be better if I waited for my hematoma to go away? Thanks.

Ryan, A hematoma is simply an accumulation of blood; in your case, in your quadriceps muscles. A PT will help you to heal much more quickly than you would on your own, so please see one ASAP. I would not use any heat or massage on your quad until a PT tells you it is time to do so. Ice and gentle stretching is ok, as is taking anti-inflammatory medications, such as Advil or Motrin. A PT has all sorts of electrical modalities which h/she can use to speed up your healing, as well as manual techniques. See your PT now, as it can only help you to fully recover. Good luck!

Hi. I have a hematoma on my thigh. The surgeon suggested keeping it iced the first week and now she says to do whatever feels good. Walking around my hematoma gets hard and big. Does using the muscles in my thigh cause my hematoma to get worse? Would physical therapy help? Would alternating a heating pad and icing help? Thanks.

Hello Ryan—- I had 2 hematoma evacuated from either side of my right thigh on 11-12-03. Surgery went fine, however 8 days after discharge from hospital the staples on the inside incision started coming loose. Maybe I went back to work to soon. Infection followed despite doing everything the Doc told me too. Treated with antibiotics after infection spread to lungs. Everything seems to be going well now. Both incisions have healed nicely (finally). By the way I fell through a platform and my leg was wedged between 2 floor planks producing a crush type injury ( hematoma). I hope your recovery is more efficient than mine. Monte
