Hip soreness

(2 discussions)

My left hip stays sore and stiff all the time. Not really painful just annoying. I believe it might be a spur. Over the years it has gotten worse.
Walking is uncomfortable and I have a slight limp. I believe it has come from years of my delivery job. I deliver newspapers and sit in middle of the seat and have to stretch my left leg alot in order to reach thru the passenger window. Advil doesn’t do anything. Of course I do not want surgery. Isn’t that bad yet. Any suggestions?

Can you change the way you deliver papers and not have to stretch your leg so much?

I have had some tests, X-rays plus 3 MRI’s, 1) of the left hip area and 1) of the lumbar spine area and also 1) MRI with the gadolinium contrast dye. What that showed was that I have a labral tear in my left hip, on a scale of 1-100 with 100 being the worst mine is a 70. I also have a pinched nerve in my lower back at the L5 area. I also have had an x-ray guided cortisone shot into my left hip for the pain, which is supposed to last up to 3 months, and I think that has helped. If you have insurance and you have an HMO you should have your primary care physician give you a referral to an orthopedic doctor who can order the MRI tests to be done. I have seen 2 orthopedic doctors and a rhuematolgist. The rhuematolgist wrote me a script for a physical therapy evaluation and 12 physical therapy exercise sessions to strengthen my hip and back, I am now finished doing that. One of the ortho docs also wrote me a script for getting a selective nerve root block in my back done, which I am thinking I will have done at some point. So far my insurance has paid for everything but my co-pays, which is great, as all of these are expensive tests. I always take Advil PM for sleeping every night before I go to bed, and that has helped me also. The ortho doc says that because I have 2 problems it’s hard to say where the pain is coming from in my case. I used to think the pain was from my hip, but now I am thinking it is more from my back. If I have the selective nerve root block done in my back and the pain goes away we can then say that most of the pain is coming from the pinched nerve in my back. I am hoping to avoid surgery on my hip, which is a last resort. In that case the surgeon would trim away the labral tear in my hip, but I don’t want to have to use crutches, as I live in a condo on the 3rd floor, and I also have 2 dogs. Feel free to write back any time and I’ll answer. Where is your pain and what does it feel like? I sympathize with you, as I know how hard it is to carry on with so little sleep. The Advil PM really does help me sleep, the docs gave me some prescription meds (anti-inflammatories, and Celexa) but with all the side effects of these meds I haven’t taken them). I feel like the meds are only a band-aid to the problems. We need the docs for diagnosing but I am into alternative meds whenever possible. I hope this helps….
