Hump between the shoulder blades?

(10 discussions)

Hello. I’ve never posted here before and I don’t have back pain, but I do have what might be considered a problem and would like to know if anyone here could help. Between my shoulder blades and slightly higher than that I have what I consider to be a predominant hump. It’s like one of my lower cervical vertebrae sticks out more than the others. My head also leans a little forward from this point. I’ve had this all my life. I had a physical trainer and a martial arts instructor both tell me that is comes from bad posture, and that it is not normal but that the vertebrae (spelling?) can be aligned with the use of a brace, posture exercises or a chiropractor can put it back in place over several visits. I’ve noticed many people with this hump, but many others without it. The ones I’ve noticed who don’t have the hump seem to stand much straighter and their heads stand straight up from their necks rather than lean forward. Is there any way to actually correct this because I’m afraid it will eventually cause me problems as I age and also I find it unsightly? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks again in advance.

I am very interested in the answer to this question. My 13 year old daughter is very embarrassed by her hump, she does not have bad posture, but does lean slightly forward, is this maybe caused from her weight?

Hi, I am very interested in this subject as well. I am 22 and like to be outside. I have a slim physique, and then my hump comes out. Please help.

I noticed a couple of months ago that I had this hump in my back between my shoulders. I had never noticed it before and it scared me enough to go to my doctor. He walked in looked at me and said it is fat. I am somewhat over weight but not to the point of making humps on me. He basically turned after he said that and left. I am not sure I believe him and am keeping an eye on this. From what I have read here I must have had this a long time and never noticed it before. I do not have bad posture but do sit at the computer a lot at home and my office. If there is any more information on this I would like to know. I will say after the doctor telling me it was fat I was embarrassed enough I have lost weight but it isn’t helping it to be any smaller. Infact it seems to be larger. Thanks now for any information.

The only way to get rid of it is surgery, its the way you hold your head. U hunch it over causing a bone in the back of ur neck to stick out and fat to build around it. Try pressing the back of it u’ll feel the difference of how u hold ur head

Are you sure that this is the only way to get rid of it? My mom has it and I developed it a around age 23. I didn’t have it in high school, we’ve looked at pictures. Her massage therapist says its tense muscle from over-stressing her neck and shoulders. She is overweight but I am not. I have always been very active so don’t think it is a weak bone/muscle issue. Any ideas?

Hello, I have a hump in this place as well. I have noticed it before. I am only 15 years old and not over weight. It seems very bony. I have never been to the doctor for this. I am very interested in a way to get rid of this. It is very embarassing.

I recently felt a sort of moving lump the size of my fist on the back of my left shoulder and, fearing some sort of cancerous growth, I went to the doctor. I had never noticed it, though the doctor pulled up some MRI’s I had taken for torn rotator cuff surgery, and it showed in the xrays. I wondered why my surgeon didn’t comment on it or remove it during the rotator cuff surgery. I guess he was busy with other things. Apparently it’s a common thing, the accumulation of fat in a sort of “pocket”. It cannot be lipo suctioned out but has to be cut out. So I’m having the surgery on Wednesday.

I am a 20 year old female, and I have had a hump between my shoulders since I was about 13 (or rather, that’s when I was beginning to notice it). I do have a 36DD chest, which I believe contributes to a posture issue, but I am not overweight. My head leans slightly forward, and the hump protrudes. It is very embarassing, and I will only wear my hair up (it covers it) without wearing a collared shirt. Also, in the past week and a half, I have had a constant headache in my whole head, eyes, shoulders, and back of my neck. I am getting sick of this issue, and if there is any information on how to correct it, I am very interested in hearing it.

supposedly the lump or hump on your back may be an oil gland gone crazy. You should get a second opion. the hump should be drained and the gland removed.

You might want to look up the symptoms of Cushing’s disease. It causes a fatty hump between the shoulder blades. I was researching Cushing’s disease when I found your entry.
