Infra-Patellar Tendon rupture repair

(2 discussions)

I ruptured my right patellar tendon on 12/12/02, had repair surgery on 12/17/02. My doc has me on a slightly conservative recovery program, no weight bearing for two weeks post-op, with limited range of motion and isometric quad exercises beginning thereafter. I am looking for any recommendations to ease the recovery. I am finding the knee very stiff, 23 days post-op; my range of motion is about 45 deg, with little daily progress. Can I/should I use any analgesics (Icy Hot, Ben Gay), to aid the range of motion? Hot tub, pain pills? I would appreciate any input to help improve my recovery. Thanks.

Brent…I ruptured it during a basketball game. I was attempting to stop and simply planted my right knee in a slightly bended position, then wham…immediate pain. Pain as if I had been kicked under the kneecap. There was no impact, improper twist or awkward angle, it just gave way. This fact bothered me for a while. However, my OS/Dr made some interesting points as to why this happened. I am in my forties, and tendons become less flexible/pliable with age, thus more susceptible to rupture. I also had knee surgery on my left knee back in 1978, (lateral meniscectomy), so my right knee has probably been compensating for it for over twenty years. I have also felt tendonitis-like symptoms for quite some time on my right knee, but I did not forsee this happening. It is hard to say when a rupture could occur or if it could be prevented. I would continue to scour the web; there are plenty of websites with good info. Good luck.

    Hi,

Just wondering how the injury happened. I have had tendonitis in my right patellar tendon on and off for the last 8 months. The last two months has been noticeably worse…i ice, take advil, and have been getting laser for a while. I tell my sports doctor and family doctor i’m worried it’s going to rupture or that it feels different (possibly degenerating) and they say i spend too much time on the internet reading about it and that it’s actually not that bad, yet). I do play soccer religiously and it’s really hampered my play. When i rest it for awhile it feels great all the time, but as soon as i step on a field it hurts for days. any advice or warnings signs you got when you ruptured yours??? take care…
