Injury Diagnosis? – Pain from Bulging of Muscle in outside lower leg

My 15 year old daughter, who plays basketball nine months out of the year (since she was 10)and runs cross country and track, has an injury that I can’t find documentation of anywhere. I am searching for a doctor to treat it, but I am unsure of where to go, since I am unsure of what it is called.

Here’s the problem….when my daughter runs, on the lower portion of her leg (outside of lower leg midway down above ankle), a knot and tightness in that area develops after running for a little while (on BOTH legs). It is very painful and usually makes her either have to slow down or stop running altogether. She has a very high threshold for pain, so I know it must be a high level of pain to cause her to have to stop.

One trainer told me that it is possible the sheath surrounding the muscle there is torn, and when she uses the muscle, it is causing the blood to swell and bulge out where it’s torn. I don’t know if this requires surgery or if it’s something she has to live with.

She has been dealing with this injury since she was 12, and I have been unable to find anyone who can diagnose it. She developed a jump shot at age 12 and used it extensively, playing about 30 games in an AAU season that spring/summer, so I feel like the injury stems from that.

Has anyone else suffered an injury such as this? If so, how did you treat it, and does it require surgery? I am worried about the long-term effects on her, b/c she doesn’t want to stop competing in either running or basketball.
