Inside ankle pain

(2 discussions)

I have a pain I can’t find any definition for.

It happens about 3 miles into a run on the insides of foot between the heel and the bone sticking out. I thought it was an achilles problem but it’s not really behind the foot but on the side.

Any ideas and suggestions?

    Muscledawg,

Thanks for the reply. The area you described sounds like the correct location I’m experiencing the pain.

I have tendency to pronate and my doctor told me my biomechanics were pretty strange. (My left leg has more flexibility than my right). One month my left lg will habe tendon problems, subside, and then my right leg starts having problems. I think it’s time to go to a running specialist.

Again, thanks for the great info and advice.

You should see a doctor about your pain to be sure what it is. That way you’ll *know* whats wrong and be able to get on a program to fix it.

That said, it sounds like you have tendonitis of the tibialis posterior muscle. The tendon in question wraps around the medial malleolus (inside ankle bone the sticks out) and attaches under your foot.

This muscle is responsible for pointing your toes while turning the soles together (pushing your pinky toe as far away as possible). Once your pain starts this motion might be painful.

You need to build strength in the area and stretch your tibialis muscle. For now limit your runs to 3 miles since that just brings on the symptoms. As the symptoms fade you can increase your distance until you start to get the pain again and then hold that distance until it subsides.

To stretch your Tibialis Posterior do a regular calf stretch with your knee bent slightly and your heel kicked way out to the side.

See a doctor sooner rather than later in case your problem is not what I’ve guessed.

    Good Luck,
