Interesting shoulder sounds

(3 discussions)

Hello,

I have been involved in many active sports since a very young age. I am currently 18 years old and have, what might be, a shoulder problem… I am not sure. My right shoulder clicks and “catches” when I rotate it forward and backwards. While it does not usually hurt, when I lift weights (as little as 5 lbs.) that involve that movement it tends to hurt. I have had a couple shoulder injuries, but nothing serious. If anything is wrong, I’d rather catch the problem now than later. Any comments are appreciated.

    Hi Eryn,

The numbness and burning could be neurologic symptoms that should be evaluated by a doctor. That may or may not be related to your noise symptoms but that kind of symptom alone warrants a doc visit.

The shoulder could have “a floater” in the shoulder joint. an osteochondroma is a ball of calcium and cartilage that floats inside the joint sapce and sometimes restricts joint movement and causes “crunchies”.

It might also be that you have some laxity in the joint which is causing a muscle to spasm pinching the nerve which causes the numbness and burning.

See the doc to get it all sorted out.

    Good Luck,

Mine are the same. have checked it out with the physio who said i have practically no cartilige left due to gymnastics. He said its not really a problem, and keep work on the muscles supporting the joint, using whatever exercises i can do that dont make my shoulder stick and crunch. Shoulder press and deltoid raises are the worst for me, it doesnt hurt but it catches so i cant make a smooth movement. Take glucosamine.

I failed to mention, whether it has any relevance or not, I have had shoulder pains in the “back” of the scapula for 6 years. It occasionally feels like it has “fallen asleep”, yet also burns.
