It happened Suddenly

I was running keeping a pretty good pace when I approached an incline and as I was about to reach the summit of the incline – I felt a strongpain behind my knee. I buckled instantly. The pain was severe enough to warrant flaggin donw a taxi. I arrived home had to crawl tomyapartment – no presseure couldbe pplaced on leg for 2 days. I am not at day 3 and the pain has subsided. It is localized behind the knee. I can stand straight with no pain and walk with my leg bent (well hop. Any ideas? Please let me know. Since I am a recent resident of British Columbia I have no insurance so I am trying to seek a remedy that will not include a visit to a physician. (It will bankrupt me)

Ouch! It sounds to me that you may have sprained your ACL, possibly even torn it completely. Idealy you should go to a doctor, but I guess you can just try the at-home remedies for a while. Treatment for almost all sports injuries is summarized by R.I.C.E.

R=rest your knee by using crutches. Although it sounds like you can start bearing weight on it right now, I’d recommend giving it at least another couple of weeks of rest.
I=ice as often as possible! This is probably the most important part to ensure that you recover as soon as possible. When you ice the blood vessels constrict, resulting in less blood flow. This reduces the amount of pain and swelling so that healing can begin. Make sure that you do not ice at this stage of your injury because it would increase swelling!!!
C=compression. Using an ace wrap or similar compression device will also help alievate your amount of swelling and provide support. If your are using an ace wrap make sure that you wrap towards your heart–this insures that you are pushing the swelling away from your knee.
E=elevate your knee as much as possible. I’m a big fan of this because I’ve had shin splints, sprained ankles, ect. When you sleep without a pillow, all of the swelling you’ve gotten rid of during the day by icing and using an ace wrap will return unless you elevate your leg and allow the fluids to drain.

I would also recommend going to a library and checking out books on sports injuries–many of these contain information about rehab. Anyhow, good luck!
