ITB syndrome

I am running the London marathon in April and have problems with ITB on my left knee since December.
At the moment I can’t run more than 3 miles without it hurting. I have seen a knee specialist and a physio is giving me treatment (although I don’t think she has treated ITB before). It is a really frustrating injury and doesn’t seem to be getting any better. No-one has talked to me about the marathon and whether I will be able to run it – it is REALLY important to me that I do the marathon and I will be devastated if I can’t. Do people with ITB run the marathon and is there anything else I can do – maybe change physios to someone who knows a bit more about running and ITB? ANY help or advice would be grately appreciated.

I had same problem and ran London 2002. The ITB started playing me up Sept 2001. Like you, I could run for 20 mins and then it would start to hurt. I saw a podiatrist and had orthotics made, but only got them 3 months prior to race. My training was therefore not going how I’d planned, but I was so determined to do race (it was my first marathon although I’ve run for about 8 years.) Do you do ITB stretches? If so has anyone told you to hold stretches for at least 1 and a half minutes? This definately helped. By the time of marathon I had got up to 15 miles without any pain, so that was the maximum I had run. Not ideal I know. I was told I would do no damage to knee by running through pain so decided to go for it. I got to 17 miles without pain on the day and then struggled for last 8 miles to finish in just over 4 hours. The crowd and other runners pull you through. My knee hurt for about a week afterwards but it was worth it! I am now completely free from any ITB problems but I still stretch the IT band every day, even on rest days. Have you tried a sports massage, as the IT band runs from hip, so by having it massaged at hip, it can help. It hurts at knee as that is where it connects.

    Good Luck
