jammed finger

(3 discussions)

I am 40 years of age and a full time college student and mom.
I jammed my ring finger playing basketball in the middle of March, 2013.
It was x-rayed and there was no break.
I splinted it for a month and the pain and swelling went down.
I’m now out of school for the summer and have resumed normal activities.
The swelling and pain have resumed, it hurts to bend.
Is it time to get another x-ray? Thanks,Laura

: Thanks,: LauraI would follow up with your doctor, just to see what you are dealing with. If it was a small fracture, it would have probably healed by now anyway, but a follow-up X-ray is always nice just to see what it might have been originally. I would think you might just need some initial therapy from a Physical Therapist to get you started, and then you can do the rest at home. Once you get your range-of-motion back, you probably won’t have any further problems. Let us know what you decide to do, and good luck.

Dear Doctor, I am 11 years old and I think I jammed my finger. I think this beacuse my 14 year old brother who plays football threw the ball to me with a lot of force and when I tried to catch it the ball hit my finger it a weird way. Now my finger is swollen and I can’t bend it past a certain point. I made a splint (popsicle stick wrapped around finger with that white tape stuff)to keep it straight but it still hurts. Was the splint the right thing to do? get back to me.~tanya

you are the biggest wuss I have ever known. A month splint for a jammed finger?! OMG…pipe down…quit complaining. I play football and jam one or two of my fingers every week. big deal. it hurts a little, but ice it, and quit dramatizing. WOW… I would love to see what happened if you broke or dislocated your finger, …probably a body cast? HAHAHA
