Jones Fracture

I am a 15 year old athlete and I refractured my 5th metatarsel. I sustained a Jones Fracture. Apparently, when I first fractured it, it never completely healed. I refractured it on August 29 of this year and had surgery on Sept 30 to place a screw in my foot. I had to miss my sophomore season of varsity soccer, I’m missing a huge tournament that my club team is going to on Dec 5 and I have to miss the beginnning of my high school basketball season. I haven’t yet gotten to okay to play and my foot still hurts when I walk on it too much. Why is this taking so long to heal and when might I expect to be able to participate in sports? I just wanna play…..

The 5th metatarsal base fracture or Jones Fracture is attached to tendonous fibers of the PT longus and brevis. Many times, non-union can be a problem with this fracture. Since you have refractured the area at least twice, you could have problems with union of this bone. Also, because of your age, the secondary ossification of this bone may be affected. This could explain the long healing time.
