Knee injury – please help!

(4 discussions)

Earlier this year, I started running approx 0.5 miles, building up to 3.2mile charity race.
A few weeks later I did a long mountain biking session (off road), and afterwards, by knee was seriously hurting.

There was no swelling, just pain in moving my knee, and walking / bending. Also, no ‘hot spot’ of pain when touched.

Although I haven’t had the pain as bad since, it does tend to recur – sometimes, just after having run a short distance

Any suggestions on what I may have done or how I can stop it from happening again?#

Thanx in advance for your help

It’s mainly from the front of my knee, but it can be on the inside / outside at times.
The pain is real hard to describe, but seems to be similar to a dull ache but more painful (if that makes sense), but it can be enough to make me walk with a limp….

It’s hard to offer an opinion without knowing where abouts it hurts?

Inside, outside, around the knee cap, behind etc?????
Also what exactly hurts it, and what does it feel like?

    Thanx for replying
I do a thorough warm-up before any run / cycle, but I also find that lifting can set the pain off again….

Someone I know suggested I could ahve strained my knee, but I can’t seem to find much (if any) information on that (if that is in fact what I have done)

Mmmm not sure, as that’s not one specific spot. I was expecting it to be the outside possibly indicating the IT band. Or I get pain at the bottom of my knee cap sometimes.

I am not an expert, but hopefully someone who knows more than me will be able to asses better from the info you have given what it could be.

Do you warm up enough before you run? Or just a guess here, what about trying a little cycling before you run? That would get the knee warm but put very little stress on it. You might find that makes a difference.

Anyway, sorry I can’t be of more help. I hope someone who knows more responds to this.

    Good Luck.

    Sarah
