Knee ligament damage

(4 discussions)

Two weeks ago I landed akwardly playing football and my left knee jarred. I went to hospital the next day and was told I had damaged ligaments and was sent home on crutches. Now I am walking ok, if I squat there is discomfort in my knee and from time to time it aches. The day after the injury, my knee was very tight as if I had a tight strapping around it and also, my leg gave way on me on one occasion. I also feel some degree of discomfort if I keep my leg on the ground and twist to walk off the opposite way. Can anybody advise exactly what my problem may be now, some 2 weeks on? Many thanks.

Could also be meniscus (cartilage) damage – did your knee swell up straight away or about 24hours afterwards? This can be a good way to distinguish between cruciate and mensicus injury as they often have a similar mechnism of injury.

Swelling occuring within an hour is usually inidcative of a cruciate ligament injury whilst swelling 24hrs post injury is usually meniscus

Just squatting normally causes the discomfort. Not visited hospital as yet, jst awaiting an appointment which is still some 4 months away. 7 weeks on and still no improvement in the knee. Lost of aching and tightness.

    Many thanks for your comments.

    Karl,

In your post you said; “if I squat there is discomfort in my knee”. Were you referring to weighted squats as a form of exercise or just squatting down one time?

    Any edema or bruising?

Was an MRI performed at the hospital?

To help prevent a re injury, learn as much as you can about the biomechanics of the knee. Also, be aware of the possible secondary effects of faulty movement patterns that can develop after an injury.

Take an educated, slow, easy and relentless road to rehab.

    Hi Karl,

This sounds like a cruciate ligament problem. Please see a doc to get a proper diagnosis. If there is ligament damage consider finding a doc practiced at prolotherapy. This is an injection technique which can help regenerate all but the most seriously damaged ligaments.

    Good Luck,
