i have been cycling for years (mnt) and have seen alot of people develope knee pain after clocking high miles. one common problem seems to be foot position (same idea as running with an orthotic) you can buy wedges for under you cleat that will essentially neutralise the position of you foot, taking the strain off your knee. (if your foot is to inverted the force will be transfered to your lateral knee, and could cause a mild sprain) i cant remember what the wedges are called, but the bike shop should know, ask one of the roadies at the shop,
    just an idea?

I seem to have the same sort of symptons, only on right outside of knee though. I started getting them after a 12 hour cycling time trial (261 miles!) so it could be over use except Ive not had any trouble with my knees in 20 years of racing. After 4 months hoping it would heal I started going to a physio, I have raised my seat about half an inch which helped a little but the problem remained. I have changed the cleat position on my right cycling shoe to rotate my right ankle outward a little more and that has brought the most relief. This stops the pain on the outside of the knee (where the tendon on the outside of the knee joins the top of the tibia),The soreness is still there but seems to just about disapare for a while then comes back. With the cycling shoe turned out the outside of the kneecap tendon below the knee cap gets mildly sore instead! I have now had orthapedic inserts put in my cycling and normal shoes as there was some pronation but still can not completely get rid of the syptoms!!!

Judging by what you’ve told me it sounds more like a problem in the joint itself rather than with the LCL. You should probably go see a sports physio to check this out. It sounds like you may have a damaged meniscus.

You may also have a condition called patellofemoral syndrome which is caused by the patella moving wrong in its joint and grinding the femur. However, you would probably be in constant pain when having this condition.

    Hope this helps!
