Knee pain when going downhill

(5 discussions)

Hello all,

I went backpacking this weekend for the first time this year. During the trip I experienced alot of pain in my left knee when going downhill. I had to go down most of the hills sideways. It was only slightly sore going uphills and I had no pain and was able to walk normally on flat sections. It’s been only mildly sore since then. Does anbody know what this pain might be caused by and how to prevent it on future trips?

Thanks,

Could be Chondromalacia patella, which can be remedied early if caught. More stretching and strengthening of muscles around the knee will most likely clear up the problem. Since this is the first time this has happened, it is probably not and will not become a serious problem. However, if the problem does not go away after several months (at the most), then go see a doctor.

WARNING Don’t go down the hill sideways!
The camber of the hill will make you pronate the higher leg more which will make your patella not track properly and the lower leg will supinate which will basically do the same thing.
Live with the pain going down as you should until you get home and rest until it’s completely better. (until you can walk downstairs with no pain)

Maybe you over-pronate and if you were wearing a backpack going down hill then the extra weight and the force of impact going downhill will be making your arches collapse as it does in runners with the same problem.

    Good luck.

There’s a lot of things that can go wrong with the knee ranging from a sprained ligament to torn catilage so I can’t really tell you for sure what is going on. It would probably be best if you had your knee looked at by a doctor if this problem persist.

As for now, avoid activities that cause pain, ice for 20-30 minutes every other hour (if possible!), and wrap your knee in an ACE wrap. This should speed up healing and, hopefully, get you back to backpacking.
