Knee pain while going downhill

Recently I started Hiking uphill with a backpack(15-20lbs). No problems on the way up. On the way downhill – i experience a
shooting pain on the both sides (inside, outside) of my left knee. If the trail flattens or starts going uphill again – my knees are ok. For a day after the hike – i experience the same pain walking down the stairs. the pain goes away completely after about 2 days.

please help!

Could be Chondromalacia patella, which can be remedied early if caught. More stretching and strengthening of muscles around the knee will most likely clear up the problem. Since this is the first time this has happened, it is probably not and will not become a serious problem. However, if the problem does not go away after several months (at the most), then go see a doctor.
