Since it sounds like your problems seem to be inflicted by stretching, I’d say that it probably involves the ligaments in your knee, namely the MCL (medial collateral). I started running too soon after recovering from a stress fracture and had symptoms similar to what you are describing and was dignosed with an MCL sprain. However, unlike my acute sprain, your injury appears to be chronic .

As far as treatment goes, I’d recommend simply resting for 1-2 weeks. This may take longer depending on what degree of a sprin your have. (Mine was fist degree-the least serious.) Also, do ice massage and take ibroprofin (sp?) to reduce inflammation and see a doctor, he’ll probably send you to a physical therapist.

A test you can do to determine if you have an MCL injury is called a valgus stress test. (Be careful!) Sit on the floor with both legs extended (180 degress flexion). Have someone else place one hand on the outside of the injured knee and the other on your medial malleolus (that bony part on the inside of your ankle). Using the hand on the outside of your knee as fulcrum, attempt to pull your medial malleolus away from the body. This test isolates the MCL and other possibly injured structures on the medial side of your knee. If you have a very severe MCL sprain (third degree) your knee might open up. Eww.

Anyhow, hope this gives you insight as to what might be the problem.

Hi. I have the exact same injury…my pain is in my left knee, towards the posterior/medial side and includes my upper calf and hamstring. It hurts especially when I stretch my hamstring…particularly when I do a stretch where I have to press my heel to the floor. I tried resting it for a few weeks (RICE) but as soon as I started running again the pain came back stronger than ever. I’m wondering if this is an ACL injury…but I don’t recall any major blows to my knee. Hope we can find help soon.
