Knee problems

(3 discussions)

Hi, waiting on knee reconstruction after I damaged my ACL in February last year. It was just decided in October that I would get the op. Anyway the waiting list is 9 months and right now I am in agony and needing help. My knee pain is intense now and this has resulted in not sleping due to pain and sometimes not being able to get out. This is starting to affect my University work as I am missing days simple because the bother my knee giving me. my hip and lower back are beginning to give me problems and I do not know if it is related. I do not see how I can carry on like this for another 6 months till the operation. I was thinking about going to the Doctors for stronger painkillers but was hoping for advice. I know that I would prob not get moved up the waiting list but does anybody have any info. I though about going back to see the specialist but was looking for advice from people who have had this or similar problems. I was doing intence rehab in gym trying to build up the muscles but now even walking to the gym can be a problem.

the brace is more for stability while you do your normal activities…. so trying not to use it while doing your exercises is a good tip. do they do any kind of stimulus or anything at your physio? i’ve had numerous ankle injuries and the electrical stimulus always has helped me with my pain and swelling. well i don’t know what else might help you but keep in touch.

thanks, yeah I do have a knee brace that the physio gave me but they prefer me to try and do most of the rehab without it to try and build up the muscles. It just seems that ice and painkillers take the pain away for short spaces of time but then its back again. Going to try and see the specialist again soon though. Any advice is much appreciated

i never tore my acl, but last year, i did a year-long project on acl tears. i was wondering if you have a brace to help support your knee because if there is no brace, a brace with lateral support would give extra support to your knee, which it now lacks due to the torn acl. the rehab at the gym will also help because by building up muscle you are also helping to stabalize your knee. also make sure you ice your knee after any kind of strenuous activity. between these things you should be able to find relief. i can look at some of my research and see if there is anything else. if there is i’ll let you know
