Knee rehab

I think that I probably need to switch Drs — because I should be able to get this information from him. But…

I strained or partially tore my MCL 9 weeks ago. After it happened, I RICEd for about 2 weeks and then gradually started activities. I swam (except breastroke), walked, skiied, snowboarded (wearing a knee brace) and tried running. My knee did not hurt during any of these activities except running (after 10 minutes). It would hurt a little after the activity.

So, in week 5 I go to the orthopedic Dr. who gives me a hinged brace to wear for 4 weeks. It seems not to be improving and I want to know what the ??? Now, it always is either stiff or hurts. All I can do is walk and bike.

I planned to ski and snowboard in Canada next week. I am really put out that I was able to ski in weeks 3-5 but not now.

I don’t really know much medically about these things. But whenever you injure yourself it seems the norm is 6 – 8 weeks to heal. That may be so, but especially with tendons and ligamnents, this time scale seems to be only the initial healing of the chronic pain, and not back to full fitness! I am usually quoted up to 2 years before it’s 100%.
My initial reaction would be at only 9 weeks old, it’s still very much a new injury, and it just needs more time. Don’t overdo it now, I have done that, and am still suffering badly a year and a half later as a result. It might need a few months before it’s on the way.
