Knee/lower leg pain

(2 discussions)

I recently started jogging about 2 months ago. I only run 3 times a week and run between 5-10km each time.
I have developed a discomfort down the outsides of my knee when I’m not running which seems to disappear once I have started running.
also my left inner shin bone and muscle have become painful when I’m not running as well.
Any advice on what I’m doing wrong?

    Thanks for that Suzie

I went to a decent shop today and they checked on a machine where my balance and where my feet hit the ground when I walked and also the pressure points where my feet hit the ground.
I bought a pair of good running shoes recommeded by them, so I’ll see how it goes from there.
It was also suggested to me by someone else that I might have the start of shin splints, so I’m resting for a week before starting with my new shoes.

In my experience (10 years running/2 years doing ultra-marathon distances), I would say that you are having trouble with you ITB and that there are two things you might try doing. First, if you are a new runner, you should go to a reputable running shoe dealer and get a really good pair of shoes. If it is a good dealer, they should be able to recommend the shoe that is right for you by asking what your goals are, watching you run in your old shoes, and asking questions about what surfaces you run on (trails or roads). You may pay a bit more, but in the long run it is worth it. I would also suggest purchasing a pair of shoe inserts for a bit more cushioning.

I might also recommend that you cut your mileage a bit. If you have any been running for 2 months and are doing 5 to 10km runs, then you might simply be doing too much too soon. Cut back to just the 5km and add a bit each week over the next two months.

That is my 2 cents worth. I hope it was what you were looking for.
