knees

I am 53 years old. I have arthritis in my knees. I injuryed my right knee in Viet Nam. I have bursitis in my left knee. I am a long time runner. I ware knee braces when I run. Several years ago I went to a gym for a while and among other workouts I did leg extensions and leg curls. As I remember that is the best my knees ever felt. I have been off from running for a year and half. I would like to go back to it and am wondering if I should buy a leg extension/leg curl weight machine to strenghten the musciles around my knees? Will this help or hurt? Thank You Jon Custis

When one has arthrtis and lets say they run. The force of the impact of the foot on the ground is translated through the knee joint and surrounding muscles. If those surrounding muscles are weak then more of the force goes to the joint and could potentially cause wear and tear quicker. Now, if the knee muscles were stronger and they could absorb, thereby, dispating the force from the joint and protect the joint from excessive wear and tear. If you have had good results from doing resistive training and that’s the best your knee has ever felt I think the answer would be a resounding “yes”.
