Lateral foot injury

(2 discussions)

One week ago today, as I was stepping out my front door, my foot rolled inward and I fell hard.
The pain was excruciating and my vision blurred to the point where I thought I would pass out.
With much difficulty, I was able to hobble for help.By the time I got to the ER (45-50 min after fall) my ankle was the size of a golf ball and one inch below the ankle was another golf ball sized lump.
The majority of my pain was from the side of the foot, rather then the ankle.X-rays were clear. Iced and elevated foot for 2 days.
Foot turned black and blue on lateral side and top of foot before toes 3 days ago.
Ankle and foot are still slightly swollen but mobility is improving.
I can push on ankle bone w/o any pain, but while I walk (and when I sit down after being on feet) or touch the side of foot, it aches.
Could the xray have missed something?
How long should I wait or what symptoms should I have before going back to the doctor?Sorry so long!

Just because X rays were negative for a fracture does NOT mean that nothing happemned. The ligaments that connect your bones together are often injured in the sudden inversion sprain. An MRI will show soft tissue injuries while an Xray will not. I would still advise rest elevation and compression. Many times I will put patient in a removable cast brace for immobilization and support.
