lateral release

(2 discussions)

My daughter(18)just had a lateral release, and scar tissue removed… What is the usual recovery time? She was told about 6 weeks.. she will see her orthosurgeon for post op visit on wed. Is there anything we can do to help with the recovery.. the surgeon didn’t prescribe crutches but we had some so she is using them, she has tried to walk, but of course it still hurts. Should she stay off it as much a possible? The surgeon prescribe only as tolerated.. seems to me that this is an unstable area, and he should have told her to use crutches… any advice.. She shows dogs and was told she would be back in the running by NOvember. Thank in advanceDawn

We went to see the surgeon for post op visit.. he was very pleased with the outcome so far. he said there was very little swelling, some bruising, she starts physical therapy next week. 3 times a week for 6 weeks. Said she should make a complete recovery

I am a nurse (25) and had a lateral release done 2 years ago. Dr said not to use crutches and I was on my feet 6 hrs after surgery. I could bent 45 degrees and was told to do sets of straight leg lifts. I started PT 10 days post-op (10 sessions) and returned to work when I was 5 weeks post-op. By that time I was able to run very short distances and as for my job : I do 8 hr shifts. The first days my knee got a little swollen after a day of work but I can say I was happy about my recovery. Your daughter should be fine by next month. If you are not sure about recovery, ask your own OS, he’s the one who did the LR and saw the inside of her knee, so he’s the best person to ask questions about her recovery. Hope this can be some help for your daughter. Wish her all the best. I myself am scheduled for further knee surgery in 1.5 week (and getting nervous) but this is because my alignment was so bad the LR alone could not correct it. Burn a candle for me 03/21.
      Thanks! Good luck
