Lateral Release??????

(10 discussions)

Hello,
I am 17 years old and I had a lateral release on both knees in August.
I am still in constant pain, which may possibly be worse than before surgery.
The OS told me that my pain might not go away for 7 to 12 months after surgery but my PT had never heard this before and thought somthing was wrong b/c I am still in this much pain.
They know the kind of pain I am normally in b/c I was at PT for a year pre-opp to try and avoid surgery, so they know I am really in pain.
I was just wondering if u had ever heard any of this before???? THANKS!~Jen

JenMy daughter had the same surgery on her right knee on Dec.13 and she has very little pain. She has started running and working some with the soccer ball and will be back playing in two weeks. Her Physical Therapist says she is ahead of schedule, but she rehabs with him 3 days a week and at home everyday. Were you a very atlectic person before the surgery?

Yes, First of all you must and have to strengtenthe muscle on the inner part of your thigh. Thatis the main problem. A lot of reasons people havethe lateral release done on the knee is becausethe outer thigh muscle is stronger then the inner thigh muscle known as the (VMO). I had the samesurgery about 7yrs. ago. Also get a Don Joy kneebrace. Its a Lateral knee brace that helps track-ing problems. Along with getting the (VMO) strong-er you should have no problems after that. The websit for the brace is:(www.bracesupport.com)web site for the knee brace is:

Hi my name is dawn and I had a lateral release on 25 feb 2013.I was discharged from hospital after 4 days, but had to be re-admitted three weeks later for intense physio and spent the next seven weeks in hospital. I am now having physio twice a week but feel that the pain is a lot worse than before the operation and I cannot do a straight leg lift or bend my knee up behind me. The surgeon says that it could take up to a year for the pain to go and for the full range of movement to return.

I had lateral release surgery on April 28th and I was doing well until I slipped in the pool during therapy. Now I feel like I’ve stepped back a couple weeks as my thigh is so sore again. I was walking up and down stairs and biking everyday for 40 min. before my setback. I’m hoping I’m not starting all over again. My doctor said I would be back to normal in 6 weeks and that will be in the next few days. I am no where near back to normal.Katie

I had a lateral release done on both knees as well. I am only about 2 weeks out of the second one, but the first one I had a while back. I noticed that you are only a couple months out of the surgery, and just to let you know I had the same problem with pain for the first couple months. It took about 4 or 5 months for the pain to really go away. I still have a little bit of pain with squatting and kneeling, but it’s more discomfort than anything else. So hang in their girl, I promise it will get better!

hey jen, I’m 15 years old and I had a lateral release on my right knee in october of 02. In 00 I had cartilage removed from the same knee, and we thought that the lateral release might end the pain but it definitely has done the exact opposite. It’s nearly 16 months later and I’m still in terrible pain after the lateral release. My OS said that this was a possibility but would most likely not happen – I’m so sorry for you and I hope you get better and that will give me some hope too. Good luck.

Hi my name is Lisa I had a Lateral Release done over 8 years ago, and I’m still in pain I have done PT more times than I care to count and nothing has helped the doctors don’t seem to want to help, or care. I have done everthing that my doctors have told me to do. I have found little tricks to help dull the pain but I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it.

I wish I could give you good news, but 10 years after my lateral release on my right knee, there is still a lot of pain. Especially on rainy or snowy days when the pressure drops. I cannot sit on my knees or crouch down for long.. It really hurts. Hope you have better luck than I did.
