left toe pain

About 2 years ago while playing golf as I placed my weight on my left foot during the swing I experienced pain in my left foot pinkie and 4 toe.
This was the first time I had any pain.
Most of last year I could not play in regular golf shoes with out terrible pain and limping. I played in sandals.
I now am getting that pain while wearing dress shoes, flats or heeled.
If I take the shoes off the pain subsides but will linger and return as soon as I put shoes again.

I have started experiencing a sharp pain in my left big toe when walking. The pain does not exist all the time, and on occasion will hurt when I least expect it. It is a sharp excruciating pain all at once. At almost all the other time, I fell nothing at all. My shoes do not hurt. It does not hurt to touch, but when it does I almost scream with pain. It seems to be in the joint or around the joint of the left big toe closest to the knuckle first joint fromt he foot. What can this be? What can I do to find out what the problem is.
