Lower right buttocks pain

(3 discussions)

I am a runner building my time back up after surgery that had me off my feet for 5 weeks. I have developed pain in my lower right buttocks which, according to your injury identification helper sounds like Piriformis Syndrome. What the suggestions don’t indicate is whether it’s all right to continue running while it hurts or whether I need to lay off for a few days again? (I’m 53 years old and female, in peak condition from running, cycling, and weight training, though the last 5 wks. have likely significantly decreased that conditioning somewhat.)

I’d be interested in what you found out too. I’m dealing with sacroiliac pain – in the right buttock. Ha, it sure is a pain in the butt ! Maybe it could be that – mine started with trochanter bursitis and hip pain though, but from what I understand, it isn’t always that way. I also had a piriformis tightness problem before. I stretch alot and can’t do wide stance squats – lunges are good (lateral movement).

Wow! That is EXTREMELY helpful. You really know your stuff. I will make an appointment with my sports doc on Monday. Had been hoping to avoid doing that (I feel like I spend my life in doctors’ waiting rooms), but it seems I can’t this time. I’m icing it as we speak, and just loaded myself with 600 mg of ibuprofen. Thank you so much.

In my experience piriformis pain is rarely experienced below the buttocks. More frequently is it experienced as unilateral low back pain provoked by a single leg stance as in putting on pants or referred sciatic pain (dull ache) on the lateral aspect of the lower leg from the tib-fib joint down above the ankle and sometimes even the dorso-lateral foot.

It is possible that what you are experiencing is a Hamstring strain so it might be wise to get a H&P from your own doc to differentiate between the two.

In either case, resting, icing and anti-inflammatory meds (per your doc’s Rx) are probably indicated. Don’t do anything that hurts during or after.

Depending on the diagnosis the treatment will be different so you should probably get an eval and possibly so Physical Therapy to determine why you have the problem in the first place.

    Hope that helps,
