Lumps on Back with pain

(10 discussions)

In Dec I noticed a lump on my lower back 2-3 inches from the spine and have since found 2-3 more in the same area. I have had increasing back pain over/ in the right hip area over the last 2 years and only recently realized they may be connected. When I have a sharp stabbing pain (pain will stop me dead in motion, but then goes away in 10-15 seconds like it never happened) the lump is hard as a rock and softens as the pain dissipates. This pain seems to hit me when I walk over uneven ground or when moving from a sitting to standing position, very seldom when I am doing heavy lifting, or strenuous activity. The CAT scan did not revile anything and have an MRI later this month, I have read a lot of people with the same symptoms but no one seems to respond after they have seen the Doctor. Does anyone have a diagnosis or thought? I have been told by my Doctors so far Fatty tumors, Cysts, and muscle pain.

Well a CT or MRI would more than likely find any tumors or anything of that sort. Could be a lipoma which is a benign fatty tumor and really doesn’t take on much concern. Could also be a cyst. Hard to tell. Are you sure about the CT and MRI results?

i have a friend with the same symptoms she is in serious pain and has seen several doctors over it. first she had one under her shoulder blade that “moved” toward her spine and grew bigger. then she got one on her lower back and now another one is forming above the first. the doctors tell her its just a fatty knot, but from what I read about them they arent suppose to call pain. I wish I could find some information to help her.

I have numerous lumps on my back and butt. It started with one about 6 years ago just under my rib cage in the back and then another in a similar spot, other side. Since more have shown up. I have heard similar results from doctors re: being fatty, or lymphomas. Currently no insurance and a lil concerned b/c of the addition of more. Fortunately, no pain here. I would describe them as a lil Aichy at times but thats it. Glad to see a thread here.

I have been to be examined today at the hospital and I have almost identical symptoms you have mentioned having endured this for 2 years I had enough. my consultant has suggested I have the 2 lumps removed by surgery and hopefully this will get rid of the pain

Unbelievable! I have the same problems that no one can figure out for the last 3 years. I have been told that they are just fatty deposits and that I shouldn’t worry. I AM worried though, because they are extremely painful! I had one doctor shoot steroids into one (about the worst pain I have ever felt) – and it felt better for about a week, then the pain came back. I’m very curious as to why so many people have these and yet there doesn’t seem to be any doctors aware of this. What type of doctor should I see that would actually perform surgery to remove these or even do more than an exam by asking me questions and then telling me there is nothing to worry about. How would they know this without further investigation? I really can’t live with this anymore! Any thoughts are most appreciated.

This is quite strange….My son has had a bad back since birth, spondolythesis L5/S1, had surgery at 16, screws inplanted, numerous physical therapists, nerve blocks, shoe insoles, you name it we’ve tried it. Recently, while giving him a massage (cold weather affects him huge) I noticed a lump near the spine, also, he has been complaining of severe pain above his left hip…are they related? He has given up on doctors and I can’t blame him. Did you get any answers? Please let me know. Thanks so much Liesha

After reading these six comments, I was just wondering if any of you had anymore info or results on your conditions. I too am struggling with the lumps, near my spine, and across the top of my hip area in the back. Some spots maybe two or three are so painful. I have heard the same story from the drs and physical therapy people, etc. I have a MRI tomorrow afternoon and I am worried, that they will not find anything of course, I will be stamped as crazy and a complainer, but I tell you what, I am tired too of living with this limitation and am sick and tired of not having someone take the time to really help me figure what it all means. Maybe there are several things going on..cool, let’s get to them one at a time and let me start seeing some relief.

My girlfriend has this exact thing. Causes her a lot of pain. Any way someone could post a followup as to what they’ve actually found out about it? (so other people can benefit from it.)ThanksMonty

I too am affected by the “lumps”. I was in a car crash 18 years ago and figured they had to do with the injury. The new Physician I’m seening now is confused by them and is wanting an MRI done. Unfortunatly they are very painful…uneven ground or just touching them will send me to my knees. Just like evryone else I don’t want to be told they are “fatty tumors”. I will keep posted with updates as I hope all of you do.
