McConnell Taping vs. Kinesiotaping
(5 discussions)
I am doing an inservice on the effectiveness of taping for shoulder subluxations to a group of therapists. I am a level II OT student. I observed McConnell taping on the shoulder of one of my patients to help w/an anterior subluxation.. however, I had never heard of it for the shoulder (just the patella) The only tape i’m really familiar with is kinesiotape so I decided to compare the two.
Would you use kinesiotape for a shoulder subluxation???? and would you be able to help me w/the differences of the two. I have a pretty good base but i’d like some opinions from other ppl… any information you can provide is great.. Thanks

Kinesio taping is not really effective for the subluxed flaccid arm. However, if there is still some nerve involvement it can be very effective for muscle facilitation.

Are there any books out there with a detailed description of how to do taping for subluxed shoulder?

Kinesiotaping is a much looser technique. McConnell taping however can actually hold things in a better anatomical position and allow for a very mild static stretch of whichever structure is contributing to misalignment, in knees or protracted shoulders, or to allow some adaptive shortening, in subluxing shoulders. I love it, but am very careful to eval the pts skin integrity and tolerance to tape. I’ve actually pulled off quite a chunk of skin before.

Kinesiotaping allows for support and stability of a joint or muscle without affecting the joint mobility (ROM) or circulation. Kinesiotaping also can facilitate or inhibit a muscle action. The properties of Kinesiotape increase circulation, decrease edema, decrease pain and increase proprioceptive input. Therefore, using Kinesiotape on a shoulder subluxation would be a good choice. The Kinesiotape would facilitate the shoulder mucles, allow for full P/AROM, increase shoulder stability, decrease pain and incease proprioceptive input. The properties of Kinesiotape or very much different than McConnell tape. My experience with McConnell taping is that of a rigid taping that prevents ROM and does not have any of the healing properties of Kinesiotaping. I do suggest one is educated in the principles and correct techniques of Kinesiotaping before using the tape for clinical purposes. They’re many seminars on Kinesiotaping given by the Kinesio Association.
