Medial Ligament Injury

I injured my knee playing soccer about 8 weeks ago and was diagnosed as a medial ligament strain.

The prognosis was about 2-3 weeks before it would be OK. After 2 weeks the injury had really improved, but since then I have continued to have paid across the joint line when crouching down or kneeling.

Does anyone know if there could be other damage (i.e. ACL, or cartilage??)

    As you can see everyone is different so there is no set answer as to whether or not you have done other damage. If you are still worried go and get some advise from a pro!

    I injured my medial colateral ligament just over two years ago. It was over 8 weeks before I tried even very light training again, and at that stage it was no way near better. I had to restrict what I was allowed to do and be very careful no to do anything that could hurt it. If yours was doing well after a few weeks it doesn’t sound as severe as mine, but it was a good 6 months before it was reasonably strong again. During that time I did find certain things painful and it was usually worse in the morning or if I sat still as soft tissue injuries like being moved. I used to sit on my foot before I hurt it, but I couldn’t bend my knee up like that for any length of time.
    Like I said, it was like that for about 6 months. Now it doesn’t bother me, although I am still careful as it probably isn’t as strong as it used to be, all I get is the odd sharp twinge now and again. Basically what I’m saying is things like that can take a long time. BUT….if you are worried that it is something else go get it checked out properley before it’s too late!!!!

    13 years ago, my family doc told me i had sprained my mcl after a skiiing accident, told me to take 3 weeks off and then get back to it. long and short was that he missed the partially torn acl, so when i went out to ski 3 weeks later i blew the acl, mcl and most of my medial meniscus. the residual pain across the joint line is indicative of other injury, mcl pain is usually isolated to a very small spot, have a doc check your knee for other damage done. believe me, wearing a bulky brace for the rest of your life is no fun!!!

    I read somewhere that Meniscus tears are often unnoticed prior to MCL tears and might contribute to the MCL tearing in the first place.

    I tore my MCL in January and it took 10 weeks to heal (although I did ski/snowboard with a brace about once per week during that time. As long as you don’t twist it again, I don’t think any activities hurt it.) The pain in that area as it healed was sort of a constant dull pain somedays and nothing other days. If I pressed on the MCL, I could definately determine exactly where it was.

    Meanwhile…I still have a little pain both there and more toward the middle of my knee. I started running about 20-30 minutes per day at week 9 and felt like that actually strengthened the MCL (maybe not, but the last week or two of healing was fast.) But, this other pain is there.

    Another theory is that you have strained other parts of your knee compensating for the first injury.
