meniscal tear and kneecap shaved

(2 discussions)

The medial meniscus was repaired and kneecap shaved due to tissue catching against it.
Its been 7 days and I’m afraid to bend my leg or put pressure on it. It feels stiff, but I don’t want any scar tissue to form due to not moving it.
I can bend it a little and move my ankle all around.
I am using crutches and want to get rid of them SOON.
I’m in good health, so healing should be fast.
How soon do most people start walking and putting weight on the leg and knee? A physical therapist was not recommented yet.
I see the doctor again soon(10 days postop).
Should I ask for a physical therapist? Can I do leglifts and bends if it doesn’t hurt.
I am taking pain medication so it would be hard to tell if I’m straining it to much. What kind of excises do patients do to strenthen the knee after surgery?

Julia, I had the exact same thing happen to me. I got hit in the knee cap with a chair and it shredded all the cartiledge in my knee and I had to have all of it shaved down and a lateral release. My doctor only allowed me to use crutches for one day, because he wanted me to put my weight on it as soon as possible. I was afraid to, and I went a few days without putting any pressure on it at all. When I finally got my bandages off, my leg was swollen and perpetually bent at the angle it had been in since the operation. I went to physical therapy, where they had me walk on a treadmill, do leg lifts, and roll around the office on a stool, only using my injured leg. After only two weeks, my leg was stronger and I was able to walk with only a slight limp. If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me with them.

My knee was operated on March4,2011. I was told I had a torn cartledge, the meniscus was cleaned on both sides, and my kneecap was shaved. My problem comes from the intense pain that I am still having. I went back to work after one week, and went to therapy after two weeks. It has now been 3 months and I am still feeling an intense pain in my knee, so bad that I can’t finish a days work. I am on my feet all day on concrete with few chances to sit down. I am at my wits end with the pain, and all the Dr. prescribed was Voltaren rub. My question is, how long will it take to be able to function without the pain?
