Misdiagnosis (ganglion cyst)

(2 discussions)

About 3 weeks ago, a lump (2x1x1 cm) formed on the inside of my ankle right on the bone. It formed rapidly, in a matter of several days. It wasn’t painful except when putting boots on, it hurt a lot to put compression on it.A clinician I saw at the health center at my college diagnosed it as a ganglion cyst and gave me the option to have it aspirated on the same day. I agreed, and when he started the operation, he remarked, “well that’s unexpected”, and he showed me that instead of the usual thick fluid associated with ganglions, it was almost completely filled with blood. After he squeezed it all out, it returned to the normal flat state.
However, the lump returned during the night though not as large. I am trying to reschedule an appointment to have it looked at again, but that may take several weeks.
Have you ever encountered anything like this? Thanks.Charles

Ganglions can be tricky. This is just a guess- You can have something that looks like and feels like a ganglion, but be a close relative, for example a villonodular tenosynovitis. These can have pigmentation. You might need to have this surgically removed, since it returned so quickly.Perhaps you should see someone sooner. Good luck

I had the same problem except it was in my middle finger. I had mine surgically removed and the plastic surgeon said it was a “venous lake”. He said it sometimes they form without any provication. Mine hasn’t came back as of yet. I hope this helps.
