missing spinous process–genetic?
(3 discussions)
Hi, I was told by a chiropractor a few years ago that a “funny” spot I told her about in my mid back was what seemed to be a missing spinous process. You can push your finger in towards the spinal cord in that spot.
I don’t remember the name of the vertebrae but its one that the stomach muscles and digestive system nerves attach to/through (I have always had stomach probs and wonder if that is why). Recently my brother mentioned that he had the exact same “missing” bone.
Is this a birth defect? Is it common? Is it something I should have checked out or fixed somehow?thanksLiz

Did the doctor take x-rays? It is probably just a congenital anomaly but I would do some films to make sure. I have never seen this in the middle back. I have seen it in the neck and lower back.

That’s interesting. I have the same thing in my middle back (about bra strap level). I too have always had digestive issues. I’d be interested to hear if you have any results from your doctor. V

Hi! I am a massage therapist and recently had 2 clients with, what seems to me, missing spinous processes, somewhere about Th12. They did not know about it before and they do not have any problems in this area. I have never seen it before so I am not too sure what to do with it. What should I recommend them? Thanks
